Dutch for expats — finally speak where you live
The gemeente, the huisarts, your kids’ school, your contract — it all runs in Dutch, even when your neighbour insists on English. This course drills those exact sentences to reflex.
The Netherlands spoils you with English — and that is the trap. You can survive for years “on English”, but the letters from the gemeente, the huisarts appointment, the school meeting and inburgering all run in Dutch. Suddenly “someday” becomes “I needed it yesterday”.
We know this fight first-hand — Taalhammer was born in Amsterdam, out of exactly this struggle. To get things done, and to stop conversations flipping to English, you need sentences on reflex. Textbook rules will not get you there. Drilled whole sentences will.
How it works
Create with AI
A call to the gemeente tomorrow? A huisarts visit? Type in your situation and AI builds the Dutch sentences, context and audio — you learn exactly what you need.
Spaced repetition
Reviews return right before you would forget — sentences from offices and daily life become reflex. Repetition is sparring before the real conversation.
Language Radio
Dutch sentences play in the background — on the bike, on the train. The pronunciation sounds far scarier on paper than in your ear.
Who is it for
- You live in the Netherlands or Belgium — and want to handle your own affairs without asking for help.
- You are preparing for inburgering / NT2 exams — and want the language to stay for life.
- Your kids go to school here — you want to talk to teachers as a partner, not a petitioner.
- You work in NL and want office conversations to stop flipping to English.
Method & curriculum
The course is built on the Core collections and everyday-life topic collections — designed the way you naturally acquire a language: understand first, speak sooner.
The rhythm is word → phrase → sentence: a new sentence from the gemeente or the clinic returns in variants — statement, question, negation — until it sticks. Every lesson builds on the last, in a seamless spiral.
And this week’s errands go in via the Creator — learned with the same method.
What users say
Over 24,000 people forge a language with Taalhammer.
As a polyglot I tested all the other tools like Anki, Quizlet, and Memrise. But Taalhammer is in a league of its own. — Martin
Frequently asked questions
Everyone here speaks English — why bother?
English is enough to survive. But the gemeente, the doctor, your kids’ school and your career run in Dutch — and conversations only stay in Dutch when you answer fluently.
Will it help with inburgering?
Yes — you learn the language of the real situations inburgering is about, through whole sentences. You pass the exam along the way; the language stays for life.
I am starting from zero. Can I do this?
Yes. The path starts at A1 — you have your first useful sentences in week one, and difficulty grows in small steps.
How much time do I need per day?
Ten to fifteen focused minutes a day with well-scheduled reviews beats an hour of passive classes once a week.
Is the course free?
